KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — A former technician who admitted to setting fire to his family’s home and vehicles in Johor last month will serve a longer prison term after failing to pay court-imposed fines.
The Muar Sessions Court today increased Muhammad Nabil Abu Bakar’s sentence from eight years to nine years and eight months’ imprisonment.
The 32-year-old father of three had earlier been sentenced to six years in jail and fined RM5,000 each for the first two charges, and eight years in jail and fined RM10,000 for the third.
The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently but added 20 months’ imprisonment in default of payment of all fines.
According to the first charge, Muhammad Nabil set fire to his 70-year-old father’s house at Jalan Jeram Kampung Tengah, Jalan Bakri in Muar, around 9.20am on September 17.
The offence was framed under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
For the second and third charges, he was accused of burning a car and a motorcycle belonging to his 59-year-old mother and 35-year-old younger brother respectively.
